"Bridging sensory and motor: a fast intracortical brain-machine interface with patterned optogenetic feedback"

 

 
Résumé :

Somatosensory input plays a critical role in limb movement control. But so far, little is known about the way it is processed and integrated into motor commands. In particular, in the primary motor cortex (M1), somatosensory responses and motor activity have both been observed, but the link between these two components is unknown.

What makes this study particularly challenging is the lack of clear causal link between M1 activity and mouse behaviour, as well as the difficulty to provide controlled somatosensory input to a behaving animal. 

To address this issue we have developed in the head-fixed mouse a brain-machine interface (BMI) that establishes a causal link between M1 activity and a controlled behaviour. To fully control somatosensory-like inputs to M1, this BMI includes a low-latency, artificial somatosensory-like feedback directly into the barrel cortex.

Beyond its use as a research platform, this BMI with feedback constitutes a preclinical research model of somatosensory-enabled medical BMIs, which are expected to sharply improve on the performance of current generation, no-feedback BMIs.
